Taking proper care of your contact lenses, is an important part of using them in place of eye glasses. Contact lenses are a very popular alternative to corrective vision surgery, and they can really help your eyes if you take care of them. There are ways that you can get the most from your contacts, and ensure that they remain comfortable for as long as you wear them. Below, you will find some tips on how to get the best from your contacts.

To ensure that your contacts remain healthy for your eyes, you should always replace them as required by the manufacturer. Most types of contacts need replacement every two weeks with a fresh pair. If you are using daily disposable contact lenses, you should always throw them away before you go to sleep, then wake up to a fresh new pair in the morning.

Anytime your eyes start to bother you, you should take your contact lenses out and allow your eyes time to rest. Normally, if your contacts are causing irritation, allowing your eyes ample time to rest will correct the problem. If it happens to be more than just tired eyes or irritation, you should leave your contacts out until you can schedule an appointment with your optician and get them checked.

Before you handle your contacts, or put them in your eyes, you should always wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly. If you handle your contacts with dirty hands, you could easily get dirt or debris on your lenses, and transfer that dirt into your eye. An eye infection is quite possible from doing this. If your hands aren’t clean, you can also scratch or tear your contact lens which can do damage to your eyes, possibly even scratch your cornea. If you are a wearer of contact lenses your nails should be trimmed back to avoid damaging your eye when you insert the contact lens.

When you handle your solution, you should avoid letting the tip of the bottle touch any surface. You should also make sure that you read the label on the solution bottles, as there are some types of saline solution specific to certain contacts. Some types of solution aren’t meant to be put in your eyes, while others are safe as eye drops. To be on the safe side, you should always read the label and know what you can and can’t do with your solution. The container you store your contact lenses in can be an ideal place for bacteria to grow which can lead to serious eye infections. So you need to make certain that you keep the storage container as clean as you possibly can.

When you put your contacts in, you should try and put them in using the same order each and every time. This way you’ll know which contact goes in first, and you won’t get them mixed up. Before you put them in, always inspect them every time to make sure they are undamaged. If you notice a tear, or anything else wrong with your lenses, you should immediately discard them and switch to a fresh pair.

To get the most from your contact lenses and ensure that they remain comfortable, you should always take care of them and use a bit of common sense. If you experience any problems with your contacts, take them out and let your eyes rest for a while. Contacts are great to have, but you’ll need to rest your eyes every so often. This way, your eyes will get the rest and oxygen they need, and you can go back to wearing your contact lenses after a few hours.

Contact Lenses Buying Tips

Some people out there wonder why people spend money on expensive contact lenses or expensive glasses. If you’ve never worn glasses or contact lenses, then chances are that you have really good vision. However, for those people that don’t have really good vision, they will need to get either contact lenses or glasses in order to have near perfect vision.

Contact lenses, in most cases, will drastically improve your vision without having to wear glasses, which is reason enough to invest in a pair of contact lenses. They are very lightweight, and they offer you a full range of sight and mobility. Unlike wearing glasses, contacts don’t hang on your face. When you wear them, others cannot tell.

If you wear glasses, you may want to look into getting a pair of contact lenses. You can buy contact lenses in several different ways. You can order them online, which is what most people tend to do. Companies such as
AcLens offer hundreds of contacts and prescriptions, and they deliver right to your door. When you order online, you can get a
great price, and then have the contacts delivered right to you, with no travel or waiting in line.

You can also purchase your contacts at your optician’s office as well. Buying this way is a great decision if you don’t have access to the internet. You can also purchase at a local store that sells contact lenses and glasses, such as Wal-Mart. The prices are great here as well, and they offer a variety of different contacts for those who need them. You can buy solution here as well, making it well worth the trip to get your contact lenses.

If you shop around, you can normally find some great deals for your contact lenses. Prices for your contacts will vary, based on what type of contacts your optician prescribed. If you are buying the latest and greatest brands of contacts, you can count on the price to be a bit higher. Contacts cost the most when they first come out.

Some people who need contacts will want them. They may have misconceptions about them and normally don’t purchase them, choosing to go with glasses instead. Contrary to what many think, contacts don’t get stuck in your eyes, nor do they damage your eyes when you wear them. If this was indeed the case, top opticians wouldn’t
recommend or sell them.

In order to buy contacts, you’ll need a prescription. When you go to an optician for the fitting process, he will examine your eyes and let you know if you can wear contacts. There are two types of contact lenses, such as soft and hard. Depending on your eyes, you may have to get a special type of contact lens. The optician will give you his recommendation, and tell you everything you need to know and do for the contacts that he will prescribe.

If your vision is bad, or if you just want to ditch the glasses, you should look into a pair of contact lenses. They are very affordable, easy to take care of, and easy to use. You can wear them during the day, then take them out at night. Or ,even get a pair you can wear night and day. They won’t stick out like glasses, as it is very hard to tell if someone is wearing contacts. With so many ways to buy them, contact lenses are the best option for those with not so perfect vision.

Eye Exam for Contact Lenses

Before you get a pair of contact lenses, you’ll need to have your eyes examined and fitted by an optometrist. Your optometrist will write your prescription using the resulting information about your eyes. Normally, fittings for contact lenses will take longer than the standard eye exam. If you want to get fitted for contacts, let your optometrist know when you make your appointment that you want contacts.

When you begin with your eye exam, your optometrist will first examine the health of your eyes. Your eye doctor will also want to know why you want contacts, if you have any known problems with your eyes, and what you hope to get from your visit. Your contact lenses fitting and exam depends on the information that you provide.

During your exam, you’ll go through several tests that will let the optometrist know the health and vision of your eyes. Once finished, and your optometrist has the information he needs, he will write you a prescription for contact lenses. You need a prescription to purchase contacts.

When it comes to fitting your contact lenses, your optometrist will measure the curvature of your eyes and other factors affecting how your lenses will fit in your eyes. Some people are more prone to dryness in their eyes than others. The contacts prescribed for shouldn’t aggravate the dryness. In order for your optician to give you a prescription for contact lenses, your cornea will need to be free of any type of problems that can prevent you from wearing them.

Normally, your optician will give you a trial pair of contact lenses to try out, and then check them for fit once they settle in your eyes. Sometimes you may need to try out several different pairs before you find the perfect fit. The lens you choose should give you better vision, fit comfortably in your eye, and not do any damage to the cornea.

It’s very important that your lens is not torn, scratched, or damaged in any way. Before you try the contacts out, you should always inspect them to make sure there are no defects. Your optician will show you with your trial pairs how to inspect the contacts before you put them in your eyes. The optician or associates working there will need to verify that your test contacts meet your standards and the requirements for your eyes, according to what the optician recommends.

At your fitting exam, your eye doctor will also determine what brands of contacts you should and shouldn’t use. When you try out your test contacts you’ll use certain types of solutions as well, to see if affects your eyes. Some solutions will work well for some, while they may cause irritation for others. Normally, your optometrist will assist you in trying out one of the latest and greatest brands of contacts, to see whether they work for you.

After you find the perfect pair, you should make sure that you always go to your follow up visits. Your first follow up will be in a few short weeks, after which your optician will check your eyes and contacts again to make sure that everything is still going well. After that, you should always attend any follow ups that you have, to make sure that your contacts are working well, and that your eyes are still in good health. Contact lenses are a bit different then wearing regular eye glasses and some people switch between contact lenses and glasses regularly.

Protect Your Eyes From Ultraviolet Rays Year-Round

(NAPSI)-Here’s eye-opening news: While wearing sunglasses to protect against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays may not seem necessary during cloudy, cold-weather months, harmful UV rays that can damage your eyes are actually present all year-round. Like your skin, your eyes can also be sunburned, which can cause blurred vision, redness, tearing and temporary vision loss. Exposure to UV rays may also contribute to the development of long-term vision conditions, such as cataracts, macular degeneration and, in some cases, skin cancer on and around the eyelids.

In fact, light actually intensifies as it passes through the eyes and is 22 times stronger at the outer edges of the eyes and eight times stronger at the inner edges of the eyes. These are the most common places for pterygium (a thin tissue over the white part of the eye) and cataracts to develop, both of which are associated with chronic UV exposure.

Children’s eyes are especially sensitive to UV exposure, and it’s never too early for them to wear proper sun protection. In a study published in Review of Optometry, vision changes due to UV damage were found in children as young as age 9. What’s more, 71 percent of parents reported they do not ensure that their children wear sunglasses outdoors, according to a recent survey conducted by the American Optometric Association.

To protect your eyes from sun damage throughout the year, consider the following:

• Wear protective eye wear that blocks 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.

• Consider adaptive eyeglass lenses, such as Transitions lenses, which automatically adjust the level of darkness to help reduce distracting glare, minimize eye fatigue and block 100 percent of UV rays.

• Remember to also wear a wide-brimmed hat and use plenty of sunscreen.

• Visit your doctors regularly for health checkups, including your eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam.

To learn more about how to protect your eyes from UV exposure, talk to your eye doctor and visit www.transitions.com.

Types of Contact Lenses and Their Compatible Uses

Contact lenses are a cosmetic, corrective, or therapeutic lenses usually placed on the cornea of the eye. Basically Contact lenses are substitute of glasses, but these are lightweight and virtually invisible. But now, many commercial lenses are tinctured faint blue to make them more visible when immersed in cleaning and storage solutions. Some cosmetic lenses are mainly colored to alter the appearance of eye and some lenses have a thin surface treatment with UV coating which helps to reduce UV damage to eye’s natural lens.

Contact lenses are mainly used for two common purposes, to treat certain eye diseases or to change the apparent color of your eyes. Today, there are many options available for contact lenses. One can choose disposable lenses which can be changed over a night, or one can wear lenses for entire month too. If you want baby blue color in your eyes, then opt domestic contact lenses and if you have certain vision problem then this invisible tool is best for you. You can choose any contact lens according to your need or like. First acknowledge yourself with types of contact lenses, only then you can choose a best suited pair of lens.

Contact lenses can be divided into two main categories: Soft Contact lenses and Rigid Gas permeable.

Soft Contact lenses: Soft contact lenses are mainly of three types – daily disposables, extended wear disposables, and colored contact lenses.

Daily Disposables and Silicone Extended Wear Disposables: These contact lenses are made up of soft polymer-plastic material combined with a percentage of water. Due to water, oxygen can pass through the contact lens material which increases comfort. Some soft lenses provide UV protection also. There are also other soft lenses too, which are worn on a yearly basis and are not disposable. The most recent types of soft contact lenses in the market include Daily Disposables and Silicone Extended Wear Disposables. Silicone Extended Wear Disposables are made from a new silicone hydro-gel material that can be worn for up to 30 nights and days.

Colored Contact Lenses: Colored Contact Lenses are mainly meant to change the appearance of eyes. But they have vision corrective capability also. These are basically of four kinds – visibility tint, enhancement tint, color tint and light filtering tint. These four types of colored lenses serve the different needs of people as per the color visibility. Just remember, colored contact lenses are also a medical device and used for corrective purpose also. So, never give your colored contact lenses to anyone to wear.

Besides above mentioned benefits, soft lenses have some disadvantages too. Soft contact lenses easily absorb pollutants, soap or lotion. They are fragile too, which can irritate your eyes.

Rigid Gas permeable lenses:
Rigid Gas permeable lenses are more durable and easy to take care. These are made up with silicone polymers and allow oxygen to circulate to the cornea of the eye. They take more to adjust in comparison to soft contact lenses. Both soft contact lenses and rigid gas permeable have extended wear option, but should be worn as per your doctor’s prescription. Rigid gas permeable lenses are of two types.

Bifocal Contact lenses:
Bifocal contact lenses are mainly designed to give good vision to people who have presbyopia. These bifocal and mono-vision lenses come in both soft and rigid contact lenses.

Toric Contact Lenses:
Similar to Bifocal contact lenses, these lenses are also meant for vision problem like astigmatism. These are also come in both soft and rigid contact lenses. Toric lenses are used for two purposes, one for the astigmatism and another for nearsightedness or farsightedness.

After knowing all types of contact lenses now you are able to buy a perfect pair for yourself. There are various online stores, where you can get more details about best selling contact lenses. But it is advisable that whatever you buy for your eyes, you must consult your doctor first and buy a product from a known brand like Freshlook and Acuvue. Take advantage of online deals to order products from 2000+ online stores at discounted prices.

Good News In The Fight Against Leading Cause Of Age Related Vision Loss

After a lifetime of normal vision, not being able to see people’s faces, watch TV or read a book is devastating. That’s the tough reality, faced by thousands of Canadians as they age who suffer from a degenerative eye disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It’s the most common cause of vision loss for Canadians over the age of 50.

AMD is an eye disease that occurs more frequently with age. It damages the macula, a very small and specialized area in the centre of the retina, which is responsible for central vision necessary for ordinary vision-related activities such as seeing faces, reading and driving.

There are two types of AMD, dry and wet. Typically, dry AMD progresses slowly and is usually less severe. Until two years ago, the diagnosis of wet AMD meant severe central vision loss and possibly even blindness, in a matter of weeks to months. People’s lives were devastated because their independence and autonomy were at risk.

In 2007, a new treatment called Lucentis was approved by Health Canada. It is the first and only treatment for wet AMD that has been shown to actually improve vision. The majority of people with wet AMD can see their vision improve after the first treatments.

The good news for people with wet age-related macular degeneration in New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador is that they now have access to Lucentis through their provincial drug plans.

“Lucentis stops macular degeneration in its tracks and having access to it is a real milestone for New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador residents,” said Duncan Williams, CNIB’s executive director for New Brunswick. “Until now a diagnosis of AMD almost certainly lead to significant vision loss or blindness. We congratulate the governments for recognizing the importance of this treatment and the differences that it will make on the lives of patients.”

If you’ve been diagnosed with wet AMD or you notice a sudden change in your vision such as blurring or a blank spot in your visual field, speak to your eye doctor about this new advance in the treatment of wet AMD. Early diagnosis gives you a better chance at preserving your vision. If you have age-related macular degeneration questions, you should discuss with your doctor.

When the whole procedure goes well, a patient after receiving Lasik surgery will recover within one or two days. Nearly all surgeons will suggest necessary instructions for their patients to follow up during the healing process. Taking good care of the healing eyes after a LASIK surgery requires patients to strictly obey with instructions and orders made by eye doctors. These instructional suggestions are essential to minimize the risk of possible postoperative complications. This article will discuss some of the necessary instructions.

After The Lasik Surgery

The eyes after LASIK procedure should be kept away from any direct touch. The surgeon will create a small corneal flap during LASIK surgery. This flap needs enough time to heal without being moved around. In this case, eye rubbing should be strictly avoided. In addition, LASIK receivers are required to avoid taking a shower on the first day immediately after the surgery or allowing the eyes to get splashed with water. For the well being of the eyes, all water sports should be postponed for at least a week after the surgery. A third instruction is to allow the eyes to get enough rest during the healing period. Ordinary activities such as watching TV, reading, working on the computer and playing video games will actually cause eye strain quite easily. Granting the eyes enough relaxation will accelerate the healing process.

What’s more, the eyes after LASIK surgery should be away from any irritation, damage or unintentional rubbing during sleep. The simplest way is to place a protective patch over the eyes every night during the first week after the procedure. In particular, female patients after laser eye surgery should stop using eye makeup, lotions, sunscreen or any other accessories that may get in the eye. It is suggested that these things should be stopped for at least two weeks. Another important aspect is to diligently apply prescription antibiotic eye drops as well as lubricating drops prescribed by the surgeon. These medications can protect the eyes during the healing process after lasik eye surgery.

Lasik eye surgery reviews provide people intending to have the procedure with plenty of information about what to expect: the pre-surgery consultation, the surgery itself and the post operative experience.

If you have heard a lot about lasik eye surgery but have been a little tentative in taking the first step, it’s important to point out not everyone will be suitable to have the surgery.

Lasik Eye Surgery Reviews

The eyes are a delicate part of a person’s make up and even for those suffering from near or far sightedness or astigmatism (image distortion on the retina), sometimes it’s a monumental decision to take the initial step towards surgery despite it’s benefits and success rate. That’s why it’s important to understand as much as you can about the procedure via Lasik eye surgery reviews.

Lasik Consultation Process

This is vital for two reasons; you want to understand what’s involved with the process as much as possible and you need to undergo pre-testing to see if you qualify as a Lasik candidate. If the latter is ignored by the consulting physician and you’re basically told you qualify without testing, then it might be a good time to leave!

Check out how many Lasik centers there are in your area. Contact them and take special notice of their level of customer service. You’ll get an idea by how informative their answers are to your questions and level of knowledge. The consultation should include a complete overview of Lasik and other eye surgery procedures as well as a series of well defined tests. You want to get the feeling you are not being rushed.

The doctor will then determine whether you qualify as a candidate and he/she should also provide warnings about any risks and complications which could be possible.

The Lasik Procedure

The operation itself will usually take just a few minutes. It’s basically a re-shaping of the cornea and painless. Anesthetic drops are placed in the eye and a thin layer of the corneal tissue is folded back using a surgical instrument called a microkeratome.

A flap is made and a layer of corneal tissue is then removed. The flap is then replaced. The operation is delicate and sounds painful but isn’t and you are generally informed about what’s going on at all times.

Laser Surgery Post Operative

Side effects can be associated with Lasik surgery initially such as dry eyes although most patients will only report a few hours of discomfort. A short rest usually follows the surgery but in most cases, patients are sent straight home to rest. Your doctor may or may not prescribe medication but in most cases, eye drops and protective eye gear are recommended.

Recovery usually takes a little more than a week. Some minor complications may develop but these are usually attended to during your first visit back, probably within 24 hours. These could be slight abrasion, migration of the flap or inflammation.

The important thing to remember if you consider yourself a candidate; get as much information as you can from Lasik eye surgery reviews and do a little shopping around when searching for surgeons.
