Know What Makes a Poor Candidate for Lasik Eye Surgery

Lasik is a popular laser eye surgery that has helped millions of patients with vision correction. Patients who are farsighted, nearsighted or suffer from astigmatism may be able to reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eye wear. But not every patient is right for Lasik. There are criteria that must be met in order to qualify. Learn more about what makes a poor candidate for Lasik eye surgery and schedule a consultation with your doctor.

What is Lasik Eye Surgery?

Lasik is a laser eye surgery conducted in an outpatient facility. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and involves a nominal recovery time. Since inception, Lasik eye surgery has seen many improvements. But even with medical advancement and increased precision, Lasik, as with all surgical procedures, still occupies a degree of risk.

Lasik eye surgery results are different for each patient. Due to the eye’s changing nature with age, results may not last. Additional procedures if applicable, may be necessary. Patients over 40 will likely need to continue wearing reading glasses.

Your Responsibility as a Candidate for Lasik Eye Surgery

The risks associated with Lasik can be substantially reduced. Doing your part by following post-operative instructions can improve your outcome. The doctor can appropriately judge your candidacy for Lasik eye surgery.

Lasik Surgery and Your Health

The doctor will examine the condition of your eyes as part of the screening process for Lasik surgery. Large pupils under dim light may indicate poor candidacy for Lasik. Certain medications may affect the size of your pupils. This condition indicates a risk for complicates such as glare, halos and double vision.

The doctor will also check the thickness of your corneas. Patients with thin corneas should not have Lasik. Lasik is performed by creating a flap in the outermost layer of the cornea. When the cornea is too thin, it can cause serious complications, including blindness. Among other eye conditions that may enhance the risk of Lasik eye surgery are inflammation, dry eyes and crusting of the eyelids.

Patients who experience refractive instability should wait to have Lasik eye surgery. Refractive stability, or vision fluctuation is common among patients with diabetes, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. You must be at least 18 and have no recent vision prescription changes in order to qualify for Lasik surgery.

Medical conditions that weaken the immune system should be discussed with your doctor. Conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, HIV or other immunodeficiency states, can compromise the Lasik surgery recovery process. Certain medications can also affect the immune system. Be sure to inform your doctor if you are taking steroids, retinoic acids, or any other medications.

Certain professions may limit your candidacy for Lasik. Check with your superior regarding restrictions on laser eye surgery. Certain contact sports may also curb your ability to have Lasik.

The Cost of Lasik Eye Surgery

The cost of laser eye surgery can range from $499 to $2500 per eye. Lasik is considered an elective surgical procedure. As a result, you may not receive coverage through an insurance policy. There are a number of financing options available. Inquire with you’re your Lasik surgeon about possible financing alternatives.

A consultation and laser eye surgery screening with a qualified surgeon is necessary to determine your candidacy for LASIK The doctor can assist you with questions and concerns and explain other options for vision correction.

Lasik Eye Surgery Recovery Issues

In the vast majority of cases, recovery from Lasik eye surgery is quick and uneventful. However, as with most all medical procedures, there are certain risks, but if you take the recommended precautions, you’ll have little to worry about.

One of the most important aspects in promoting the healing process is to avoid dry eyes. Dry eyes can act like an abrasive to the cornea and invite infection. You’ll want to use artificial tear drops on a regular basis during healing, especially if you sense dryness. An additional unwanted side effect of dryness is the increased tendency to want to rub your eyes.

Rubbing, particularly during the first week or two should be strictly avoided. Rubbing can scratch the cornea or even worse – it can cause the corneal flap to become detached, requiring medical assistance for correction.

During the first four hours after LASIK eye surgery, your doctor will prescribe certain medications to be applied frequently, usually at 15 minute intervals. These medications will usually consist of steroids to promote healing and antibiotics to prevent infection. Be sure to adhere to the prescribed regimen of applying these medications.

You may want to limit reading, watching television or working at the computer for the first couple of days after LASIK eye surgery. Even though you’ll notice a marked improvement in your vision, you may be subject to headaches if you overdo things during the early stages of your recovery.

Avoid any dusty areas or anywhere that has particulate matter in the air. For example, don’t mow the lawn, as the mower can still up grass clippings or other debris that can enter your eyes and cause complications. Also be aware that pet hair can sometimes float in the air and get in your eyes, even if you don’t notice the intrusion.

Be careful when showering so that you don’t allow the stream of water to hit your eyes. Also, don’t allow soap or shampoo to enter your eyes. Avoid steam rooms and swimming pools during the healing process. It’s also a good idea to forego any strenuous exercise or sports activities. It’s important that you protect your eyes from any undue pressure and don’t let any foreign objects come into contact with your eyes.

During the healing process, you may notice that your eyes are very sensitive to bright light, so be sure to wear sunglasses if you go outdoors.

Complications during recovery from LASIK eye surgery are rare, but they do occur. If you notice anything questionable during your recovery period, be sure to consult with your doctor immediately.

Get Rid of Those Glasses With Lasik Eye Surgery

Lasik surgery is a surgical procedure that can be used for correcting vision defects. The surgery can be used to correct different types of visions defects like nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia and astigmatism among others. Lasik eye surgery is an expensive procedure, so you must take a health insurance cover, to take care of all the expenses associated with the surgery. Your eyes are one of the most sensitive organs of your body, so if at anytime you suffer from any kind of eye problems, make sure that you consult the doctor immediately. Certain eye conditions, if not treated on time, can cause blindness. Lasik eye surgery is recommended by several doctors these days because the success rates are very high and many people have had their visions restored due to this. Talk to your doctor about all the things associated with this surgery before you actually proceed to get the surgery done on your eyes.

If you are eighteen years or above, only then you are eligible for this surgery. Prolonged use of glasses is something that one cannot avoid, if they are suffering from defect of vision. Regular use of glasses can be annoying and the best way to get rid of this is, to undergo a lasik eye surgery. The eye surgery consists of two different procedures. One of the processes is making the corneas flap and the second is sculpting the cornea under the flap with a laser. The surgery reshapes the cornea of the eyes, so that the vision of the patient can be corrected. A microkeratome blade is used to create a flap in the outer layer of the cornea which is very thin; this layer is called the epithelium. The entire procedure of the surgery takes about 15 minutes and the recovery time after the surgery is also pretty fast. Patients can return to normal work on the very next day of the surgery.

This surgery is especially beneficial for regular glass wearers who are fed up of using glasses. Lasik eye surgery is very expensive, as said earlier, so make arrangements for this. A good alternative for patients could be to get the surgery done abroad. Medical science has made huge advancements and as a result, today you will find that the best health care facilities are available in most of the developing countries. You just need to get the surgery done, so if you can get it done in another country at a much lesser cost than that would be required in your country, you should definitely opt for this.

Now if you have decided to get the lasik surgery done in your city, you must make sure that you are getting this done from the renowned eye surgeons there. Tell your doctor about any kind of health conditions that may be affecting you, as this will have a bearing on the kind of treatments referred for your condition. Make sure that you follow all the after surgery care steps suggested and prescribed by your doctor. This will have a significant impact on your recovery and restoration of glass free vision after the surgery.

17 Tips On What To Expect After Lasik Surgery

LASIK, or Laser in-situ keratomileusis, or simply Laser Eye Surgery, is a common eye surgery today and is often the most effective one for deserving candidates compared to alternative methods. However, this procedure is to be treated like a common operation and certain post operative care is essential for the operation to get its intended results.

What is to be expected after a LASIK operation? Well, the symptoms differ from person to person, however, a few common ones which are seen in most patients are as follows:

Immediately After the Operation

* Fluctuation of Vision.
The vision will not be very clear in the first couple of hours and will fluctuate from blurred to very clear for certain period of time.

* Dry Eyes.
The eyes will be devoid of the natural tear producing characteristic. This is one of the common problems observed in most patients.

* Sensitivity to Light.
The eyes will prefer darkness and will feel irritated in bright light, including artificial light. Exposure to bright light immediately after an operation is ill-advised.

* Glares and Halos.
The patient might see a halo around objects on which he/she focuses. This is due to the retina taking some time to adjust to the change in the focal lens.

* Burning, Itching and feeling of dust like particles within the eye.

Post Operative Symptoms

* Patients with a case of far sightedness might see a sudden improvement in their eyesight within a day of their operation. Distant objects might appear blurry for a few days, but soon the vision should correct itself. Cases of irritation and dry eyes have also been reported in a number of patients.

* Patients suffering from near sightedness will take some time to heal and will start to see distant objects within an hour’s time. These patients might experience some trouble in reading immediately after the operation, but as the eye heals, this condition will improve. They are normally subscribed reading glasses for the duration while the eyesight improves.

Adherence to certain precautions after the LASIK operation are advisable for all patients. These are enumerated below:

* Take an appointment with your ophthalmologist and keep it.
* Don’t assume your eyesight has become better just after beginning to see clearer. It might be a temporary condition. Post operative care is essential to sustain this improvement.
* After the operation, keep some one nearby to take you back home. Don’t try testing your newly improved eyesight on the road.
* Do not expose your eyes to bright sunlight or to glaring fog/car lights.
* Avoid computer screens, movies and video as much as possible for a few days.
* Avoid dust and other contaminants from entering your eyes after an operation and for a few days after that.
* Wear eye shield at night for the prescribed time.
* Try not to play very strenuous sports or go to the gymnasium.
* Try and avoid the swimming pools and water parks for approximately 8 weeks after the operation.
* Contact your doctor immediately in case of a problem, which is not listed above, or in persisting problems. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

The success of a LASIK surgery depends as much on the operating ophthalmologist, as it depends upon the patient. Proper care goes a long way in assisting the eye to recover faster and better.

There are many types of eye laser surgery but the two types most often used in the United States and Canada is PRK (Photo-Refractive Keratectomy) and LASIK (Laser Assisted in situ Keratomileusis). The former first appeared in the early nineties while the latter made its appearance in the mid to late nineties.

When PRK is undertaken a laser beam that is guided by the use of a computer is used to dissolve or vaporize small quantities of tissue that are to be found on the cornea’s surface. This medical procedure seeks to remove a precise amount of tissue to order to alter the shape of the cornea to improve vision. After PRK takes place, the eye begins to heal in a week’s time, and sometimes less.

LASIK surgery is a little more complicated and involved than is PRK. The surgeon must first cut a flap of skin in the cornea of the eye. He then lifts the flap up and with a laser guided by a computer (just as in the PRK procedure), specific quantities of eye tissue that are to be found on the inside areas of the cornea are taken away. Once this is done, the flap of skin is closed up and the eye begins to heal.

If PRK surgery is performed, some individuals experience hazy or blurred vision as their eyes begin to heal but this generally does not last for very long. Mild discomfort or pain is sometimes experienced after PRK. There are incidences where the eye suffers from regression, which means that, for reasons unknown, the eye goes back to the state it was in before the surgery took place. If regression is going to happen it usually does so before six months after surgery is up. Those who suffer from this problem may need to be operated on again or instead can opt to return to wearing glasses or contact lenses on a steady basis. Often this is a judgment call and the doctor and the patient must decide upon the decision together.

When LASIK surgery takes place instead of PRK, the healing time is generally speedier and for the most part, there is less discomfort after the fact. LASIK surgery is riskier to undertake however as it involves the cutting of corneal tissue which can mean there is a much higher risk that serious problems will arise due to the surgery. Regardless of which surgery you opt for it is important to visit your doctor as required and to have your eyes carefully monitored to make sure they are healing at the rate they should be.

Complications after surgery are not common but they do exist. The risks of eye surgery are greatest for some individuals. Find out from your doctor if you are a good candidate for surgery or not and if you are not, consider alternatives to surgery. Anyone with a chronic health condition such as diabetes or lupus is not advised to have eye surgery because these conditions make healing more difficult. As well certain types of medications affect the ability of the body to heal itself naturally. Two examples of these kinds of medication include prescriptions for acne and steroids.

The popularity of LASIK surgery to correct vision problems increases in popularity. More patients are choosing this method of surgery for correcting their vision problems every year. As with any other surgery, there are risks and complications involved. Factual clinical information needs to be looked at to decide if the benefits of LASIK surgery outweigh any risks of complications. Keep in mind; complications are less likely to occur if you use an experienced doctor who has successfully performed many LASIK surgeries.

Complications resulting from LASIK surgery are rare. LASIK candidates are carefully screened before the surgery and only those with a reasonable expectation of improved vision are good candidates. Reports indicate only one percent of those who have LASIK surgery report any complications. Any complications that may occur can easily be corrected with re-treatments with the laser or other enhancements to the eye. It is rare for complications causing permanent damage to the eye or vision loss.

One complication is an irregular astigmatism. This will result in a cornea surface that is not smooth and will result in the laser beam not being centered on the eye. Ghost images and double vision are caused by swelling in the cornea but will sometimes disappear without needing further treatment. If treatment is needed, a re-treatment or an enhancement may be needed. Sometimes these vision problems will disappear when the healing process is complete.

There are certain complications to consider when undergoing LASIK flap surgery. They are associated with cutting a hinged flap in the cornea, lifting it for corrective surgery, then replacing the flap to form a natural bandage. New technology and advances in procedures have improved accuracy and fewer complications are found with LASIK flap surgery. The newest technology is called IntraLase. It is an improvement on the former procedure but also costs more. The patient is given a choice of having the more expensive procedure or they want the traditional, less expensive LASIK.

Another choice is custom LASIK that can treat vision errors that were not once noticed and higher order aberrations. Custom LASIK uses a mapping of the cornea to locate the areas that need to be reshaped to enhance vision.

If the flap is not cut correctly, it may not stick to the surface of the eye. It can be cut too thin or too thick and when placed back over the cornea it could wrinkle and cause complications. These wrinkles could lead to vision distortions caused by irregular astigmatism.

Other complications that could arise after LASIK surgery are haziness in vision, dry eye problems, and infections. Other visual aberrations include glare, halos, double vision, and loss of sensitivity to contrast. Problems with night vision or low light situations may also occur. Most of these complications or risks can easily be corrected with another laser treatment, eye drops or oral medications. With a one percent risk of complications, LASIK eye surgery is a great option for correcting vision problems. Most surgeons believe any risks involved in LASIK surgery are outweighed by the benefits.

There are many people who swear by lasik eye surgery, yet there are others who feel it is a risky procedure which would possibly have far reaching consequences. Whether you decide to have LASIK surgery is a decision only you can make, however it is wise to know exactly what is involved before making any decisions.

Eye surgery is performed on people who have decided they do not wish to wear either glasses or contact lenses any more. LASIK is a medical procedure which is performed by a qualified eye surgeon. Basically it alters the shape of the cornea in the eye and improves the person’s vision. However it is not always an unqualified success (however rarely), and there are concerns as to the long term implications of having this surgery done. So far though, long term implications seem to be promising with ill effects rarely being reported.

New and superior ways of performing LASIK eye surgery are being discovered all the time. A laser is used to perform the most delicate part of the procedure which means a lot of human error is removed. This improves the success rate of the procedure and helps reduce the margin for error.

The cornea in the eye focuses light; this light then creates an image on the retina. It actually works very much as a camera does when taking a photo. Unfortunately this “photo” is not always clear because for many people their eyes are not a perfect shape. This is when the images people see become blurred. (Again this is much as a photograph is when it is out of focus).

Because light is bent and refracted when sending images from the cornea to the lens of the eye, when it’s distorted, they become refractive errors. This is when eye glasses or contact lenses need to be worn usually for the rest of that person’s life.

There are three types of refractive errors which can be improved with LASIK surgery.

They are:-

Myopia
hyperopia
Astigmatism

Myopia is near sightedness which is when a person has difficulty focusing on anything in the distance.

When someone has hyperopia, they are far sighted. This means they can see things far away, but have difficulty focusing on anything which is close to them.

Astigmatism occurs when there is a distortion of the image on the retina. These are caused by irregularities in the cornea or lens of the eye.

All three of these eye conditions are very common, and it is possible to have more than one at the same time.
This is where eye glasses and contact lens come into their own. Correctly fitted eye wear compensates for the problems associated with refractive errors and allows the vision to be corrected.

Lasik surgery takes these corrective measures one step further and allows the vision to be much improved. LASIK surgery doesn’t always give 20/20 vision, but it can make vast improvements which can then assist in improving a person’s confidence and quality of life.

LASIK eye surgery is a type of surgery that is attempted in order that an individual who wears glasses or contacts should no longer need to become altogether reliant on either for their vision. The word LASIK means “Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis.” LASISK is a medical procedure that is undertaken by a certified ophthalmologist to change the configuration of the cornea of the eye on a permanent basis by way of an excimer laser. The cornea of the eye is the “clear covering of the front of the eye.”

What happens when LASIK surgery is performed is that a knife that is known as a microkeratome is inserted into the cornea and cuts a flap of skin. At one side of the flap is left a small piece of skin known as a hinge. The flap of skin is then gently folded back to show the stroma (otherwise known as the middle area of the cornea). A laser that is controlled by a computer is then used to dissolve or vaporize a part (but not all) of the stroma and after that is finished, the flap of the cornea is fixed up and put back into place. New and more advanced ways of performing LASIK surgery are being looked at all of the time.

The job of the cornea is to “focus light to create an image on the retina of the eye.” The cornea of the eye can easily be compared to the way that the lens of a camera works with the light to create the image you see later as film. When light is constantly bent and refracted it is given the name “refraction.” In many people the eye is not a perfect shape and neither is the cornea’s shape. As a result of this, the image that makes its way to the retina ends up being distorted or blurred (in other words, out of focus). When any of these things happen, they are referred to as refractive errors.

As far as refractive errors go, there are three main types. There is myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Myopia is more commonly known by the lay person as nearsightedness and this is when a person has a more difficult time clearly seeing objects at a distance as opposed to those that are up close. hyperopia is also known as farsightedness and this is the opposite of myopia. In this instance clearly identifying objects up close is difficult but objects far-off can be seen clearly. Astigmatism is when there is a “distortion of the image on the retina caused by abnormalities in the cornea or lens of the eye.” All three of these eye conditions are widespread while it is also common to be afflicted by more than one at once.
The purpose of eyeglasses and contact lenses is to compensate for the weaknesses of the eyes and to provide vision that is as clear as can be. LASIK is a form of refractive eye surgery that is geared towards bettering the eye’s power to focus and not just focus, but also focus well on any object. When it comes to LASIK surgery, a laser is used to remove part of the tissue of the cornea and so it is re molded in order to improve its power to focus.
